Wimpole Home Farm - Main

Visit Wimpole Home Farm

Visit Wimpole Home farm is part of meta bucket list to visit all of the properties that are owned and ran by the National trust. Wimpole Home farm is a really a property to visit if you are visiting the main property of Wimpole Hall as it is inside the same estate.

History of Wimpole Home Farm

Wimpole Home farm can date its origins all the way back to 1794 when it was built by Sir John Sonne, for the 3rd Earl of Hardwicke Phillip Yorke.

Today the farm forms part of a rare breads program, one of only sixteen farms in the United Kingdom. It aims to help conserve rare and traditional breeds of livestock from extinction. The farm is quite well know for its Shire Horses. Those that are at Wimpole Home farm are classified as at risk, which are animals where there are less than 1500 breeding female left in the world.

My visit to Wimpole Home Farm

I joined on my visit to Wimpole Home farm with my visit to the main Wimpole estate. To get to the farm, you take a short ten to fifteen minute walk though the grounds to where the farm is located on the north side of the property. You don’t need to pay to get into the farm if you walk from here as you only need to pay the once to get into the grounds.

To me the farm seems set up more for children than adults. There are low child hight signs all over the farm with little bits of information. There are a couple of quite large buildings on the farm along with a couple of smaller ones. One of the bigger buildings holds quite a few pens like the one in the picture below. I could not tell if the pigs were special, they just looked like pigs to me.

There are a couple of empty buildings which looked to be have been used in the past for harvesting arable crops. Now the lower floors are empty with the lofts having some small displays of how farming was done in the past.

There are some other animals at the farm such as rabbits and goats. There are also some shire horses in a couple of stables. You don’t really appreciate just how big those horses can get from pictures that you see. They all towered a long way above my head. I am sure that if one of them came my way I would make sure to run in the opposite direction as fast as I possibly could.

I think that if you are there to visit main Hall a small detour to see the farm is worth doing. Even though it seems to be more aimed at children, even for adults there may be of something of interest to see.
