Visit Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse - Title

Visit Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse

Visit Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse is part of the Meta Bucket List to visit all of the National Trust properties. Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse is the fourth National Trust property that I have now visited. My previous National Trust property was Wimpole Hall. As Cambridgeshire only has seven National Trust properties this puts me over half way of visiting them all. Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse is located halfway between Peterborough and Cambridge.

History of Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse

The gatehouse is all that remains of one of biggest monasteries in England. It formed part of a Benedictine Abbey at Ramsey, Cambridgeshire. The Abbey was dismantled during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. Ramsey Abbey and of its land was given to Richard Williams. He dismantled the Abbey so he could use the Barnack Stone it was constructed from in other buildings. Part of the original gatehouse of the abbey was moved to be used at Hinchingbrooke House. What was left of the gatehouse is still at Ramsey.

The Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse was made a Grade 1 listed building in 1951. The following year it was gifted to the National Trust by Ailwyn Fellowes, 3rd Barron de Ramsey.

Visit Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse

I visited Ramsey Abbey Gatehouse on one overcast weekday morning. I was hoping to find a less busy day in the village. I was actually lucky enough to find a car parking space at the church that is near the gatehouse. Sadly there is not a great to see or do at the gatehouse, especially as you cannot go inside of the gatehouse currently.

There is an information board to the left of the gate itself. There is the gate with the National Trust sign on. You cannot go though the gate at the moment so you can only see two sides of the gate house. One side looks like its been sliced to make way for the road that runs alongside the gatehouse.

I was done and saw all I could in less than fifteen minutes.
